Brown Slammed on UK Hospital Standards

LONDON (Reuters) - Hospital hygiene measures to tackle superbugs announced by the government this week are populist moves that will have little effect by themselves, a leading medical journal said on Friday.

In an editorial, the Lancet said plans outlined by Prime Minster Gordon Brown and Health Secretary Alan Johnson to deal with deadly infections such as MRSA and C Difficile were not based on scientific evidence.

Brown and Johnson announced a clampdown on infections and hospital cleanliness, including a 50 million pound ward-by-ward deep clean of hospitals.

All medical staff, including doctors, would have to abide by a "bare below the elbows" dress code and wear short-sleeved tops. The weekly journal said Brown had "grasped the wrong end of the evidence stick" over deep cleansing of hospitals.

"Disinfection of high-touch surfaces is what is needed, more so than removing visible dirt," it said.

"The public understandably wants clean wards and crisp uniforms, but politicians must stop pandering to populism about hospital cleanliness and listen to the evidence."

It said the proven way to stop hospital-acquired infections was to make sure that doctors, nurses and visitors wash their hands properly.

The journal said Johnson's own working group had found no conclusive evidence that uniforms or work clothes posed a hazard in spreading infection. informed common sense' - a level of evidence just above guesswork," it said. The Lancet's criticisms were supported by medical researchers, who said deep cleansing of hospitals would have little effect without other measures in place.

Ron Cutler, a lecturer in infectious diseases at the University of East London, said person-to-person transfer would remain the main problem with MRSA and C Difficile, and deep cleansing would offer at most a temporary benefit.

Richard James, professor of microbiology at Nottingham University said ward-by-ward cleaning would make very little difference to MRSA transmission, although it might have more impact with C Difficile which can be passed through contact with faeces.

The government's Chief Nursing Officer, Christine Beazley, said the announced moves were just part of a wider set of measures to reduce hospital acquired infections.

"The fact is there is no single remedy," she said. "Infection control is a complex problem that needs a complex solution."

Latest figures for 2005 from the Office for National Statistics show C Difficile was a factor in more than 3,800 deaths across the country while MRSA contributed to 1,629 deaths. Infections with MRSA are falling from a peak in 2003 but C Difficile cases are still on the rise.

Natalie Rooney Causes a Stir

Sparks were alegedly flying when Natalie Rooney decided to have a breast augmentation with us recently.

You may remember that she famously flashed her boobs when leaving Colleen's birthday party. The newspapers had a field day the following morning. Thereafter, all was not well in the Rooney family with Natalie telling of a huge rift with Colleen and Wayne.

Since her boob job, Natalie has been in big demand from the newspapers and magaines. We have been pestered by the press to ask Natalie to talk to them and she finally agreed to appear in the lad's mag Zoo.

She certainly looks stunning in the shoot and she is already talking about having them made bigger. I am not sure what our Surgeons are going to be saying about that, but let's take one step at a time.

Natalie is a lovely girl and she was accompanied by her Mum when she came to Mills and Mills for her breast surgery. What was so refreshing is that they were so "down to earth" and really really nice people.

Diana bothered by "fat" jibes

Of all the media scrutiny given to Princess Diana, perhaps the most outrageous was tabloid commentary that she was too fat, Prince William said in a television interview aired on Monday.

"Someone said she had cellulite or something like that. As a woman in the public eye, she tried so hard and was so glamorous, always in the gym," William told NBC's Matt Lauer.

"For any woman, I imagine, it's just outrageous that these people sit behind their desks and comment on it. There were many times we just sort of had to cheer her up and tell her she was the best thing ever," William said.

The interview with William, 24, and Prince Harry, 22, was conducted last month in London.

Denise Welch Completes Mills & Mills DVD

Denise Welch has completed her presentation of Mills and Mills new corporate DVD. Denise presents the DVD and meets some of Mills and Mills clients. She also takes you through a guided tour of our hospital and its facilities.

UK Weather Increasing Cosmetic Surgery in Spain

There seems to be some really bad weather going on back home in England at the moment... It's at this time that we see a big rise in the number of clients booking for cosmetic surgery here in sunny Spain. The weather here in Spain by contrast is incredible. Louise Truelove, 41, Patient Coordinator at Mills & Mills Medical

THE cosmetic surgery guru of Puerto Banus is Louise Truelove, who carved a career out of the local obsession with perfection. When Louise’s partner of six years had an affair with a 53-year-old gran, her world fell apart. She left a well-paid job as a PA and moved from London’s Notting Hill to start from scratch in Marbella. She now has a great lifestyle and a toyboy – also an ex-pat. She says:

"I love it here – I don’t miss anything about the UK and if I ever forget that I just switch on the weather forecast for back home and I’m reassured.

The only thing I dislike about living here are the British holidaymakers. Expats and tourists don’t tend to mingle as they are usually an embarrassment. When will overweight British men realise taking their shirt off is not a good look?

You have to work hard here to achieve a good lifestyle but at least it is achievable, unlike in the UK.

Here, what you get in your pay packet is yours to spend how you please, and for many locals that means cosmetic surgery.

I arrived in September 2005 and knew I was home. I got a job working for the biggest cosmetic surgery group out here as a patient co-ordinator and I love it. I’ve had a boob job myself, liposuction on my chin and some Botox.

Brazilian Women too Fat, Men Drink too Much

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Women in Brazilare not as slim as their internationally famed models may suggest and up to one-third of men drink too much, a survey showed on Wednesday.

More than 44 percent of women are overweight in Rio de Janeiro, where scantily clad females parade during Carnival and on beaches, a national survey by the health ministry showed.

Women in Sao Paulo, the capital of a fashion industry that gave rise to big-name models like Giselle Bundchen, are also more heavy-set than elsewhere in Latin America's largest country. Almost 43 percent of women in Sao Paulo are overweight, the third-highest rate among 27 state capitals surveyed.

Brazilian health officials say that the rate still falls short of levels in the United States but that they are concerned. "It is higher than we would like," said Deborah Malta, one of the survey's coordinators.

Researchers blamed traditional eating habits as well as a lack of exercise. Many of Brazil's foods, such as the typical bean and meat stew called feijoada, are rich in fats. Average consumption of fruit and vegetables was "far below" the minimum daily recommendation of 400 grams (14 ounces), the survey said.

Brazilian men fare much worse in the poll. Between 45 percent and 52 percent of men in major cities are overweight and as many as one-third drink alcohol excessively, the study found. The heaviest male drinkers are in the northeastern city of Salvador, where 33 percent consume more than five alcoholic beverages per day. In Rio de Janeiro, one in four men regularly drinks too much.

The survey, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percent, polled more than 54,000 people by telephone from August to December of 2006.

I think this must be in part due to th fact that our own Doctor has had a thread lift herself. Dr Mabel Niera has  had a great result and that seems to be inspiring many others to go for this amazing treatment.

Marbella Belles on ITV1 from the 20th of March

This month sees the start of the eagerly awaited Marbella Belles from ITV.

This documentary is et to follow the work of Mills and Mills medical Group and in particular the work of Louise Truelove our Senior Patient Coordinator.

For some months now, ITV have been following Louise in her work and her life in general here on the wonderful Costa del Sol.

The series concludes with Louise herself having a breast re-augmentation. For anyone considering cosmetic surgery this is must see and it gives you a good insight to into having cosmetic surgery abroad. A number of patients are featured as they go through the journey of cosmetic surgery. You also get the chance to see some patients quite soon after treatment.
